Melting Aluminum Cans At Home – Easy DIY Recycling Process

Today I’ll be melting about 300 aluminum cans at home in my backyard foundry. I have been saving these beer and soda cans from some time and I’ll turn them into big pure aluminum ingots. This is a very simple DIY project that anyone can do with the proper tools. The whole melting process took about an hour and used a quarter tank of propane. 1. For all those wondering, I don’t do this for the value of ingots in money. I don’t sell them at all. It’s main purpose is the artwork that I make from them.

  2. Please correct me if I am wrong, but, the cost of propane versus what you actually get for the aluminum……..not worth it!
Just turn in crushed cans for the money!

  21. What total weight did you get from those cans in Aluminium ? I think in the UK cans are like 15 grams , so to get 1000g you'd need about 66.6 cans or something
1 kilo of aluminium is worth about £4.83 here in the UK. it's not worth much but id rather use the metal for art

I wanted to try and make some custom miniatures

What is the chemical composition of the slag , I wonder would it be worthwhile to remove the paint / ink from the surface of the can to reduce the overall amount of slag?
Ahhh cool its a mix of various metals and compound chemicals , the Aluminium oxide and Aluminium can be separated mechanically and isnt toxic. The Aluminium Oxide can be used for Paint , Dye , Concrete , Explosives and Fertiliser ,, waste not want not

The cans themselves appear to be 3004 alluminium alloy , there are some other metals in there apart from Aluminium , some magnesium and cooper , iron
